The way you store woollens at the end of one winter decides how they look at the start of the next. Here is how to clean and store woollens so they survive the off-season.

Always clean before storing

This is the single most important step. Invisible traces of sweat, food and body oil attract moths and set into permanent stains over months. Clean woollens before they go away, not after they come back.

Cleaning woollens

Check the label: many sweaters are hand-wash or dry-clean only.
Never wring wool — it stretches and loses shape.
Dry flat, never on a hanger, to keep the shape.
For delicate or structured pieces, professional dry cleaning is safest.

Storing so moths stay away

Make sure each piece is completely clean and dry.
Fold sweaters — do not hang, which stretches shoulders.
Use breathable cotton bags or boxes, not plastic.
Add neem leaves or cedar, which repel moths without staining (unlike naphthalene balls).
Keep the storage spot cool and dry.
