How to Wash White Sneakers So They Actually Stay White

The right way to clean white sneakers without yellowing them — and why the sun and the washing machine work against you.

White sneakers look incredible for about a week, then turn grey and yellow. Here is how to clean white sneakers properly so they stay white for longer.

Why they yellow

Two culprits: washing-machine agitation (which breaks down glue and materials) and direct sun drying (which yellows the midsole and any bleach residue). Avoid both.

The safe method

Remove the laces and wash them separately.
Dry-brush off loose dirt first.
Mix a little mild soap or baking soda with warm water.
Scrub with a soft brush — toothbrush for tight spots, bigger brush for the sole.
Wipe the upper with a damp cloth; do not soak leather.
Air-dry in the shade, stuffed with white paper to hold shape and absorb moisture.

For the midsole

A magic eraser sponge works wonders on rubber midsoles. Go gently on painted or printed areas.

What not to do

No machine washing for leather or premium sneakers.
No direct sunlight.
No coloured cloths or paper that can transfer dye.
